What usually stops people — answered

I'm not in Empuriabrava all year — is it still worth it?

Yes, and it needs nobody at home. Everything the panels produce while the house is empty goes to the grid and is credited on your bill under compensación de excedentes, and you can watch production in the monitoring app from anywhere. We can also size the system around the months you are actually here.

This is not an edge case in Empuriabrava: 10.2% of its homes are registered as tourist accommodation (INE), so a roof that keeps producing while nobody is in the house is normal work for ENERA here.

Will anything be in a language I don't read?

No. We work in English, Spanish, German, Dutch, French, Russian, Ukrainian and Polish. The quote, the contract, the warranty and the handover walkthrough are in your language, and so is the person who answers when you write.

Who deals with the trámites and the town hall?

We do. The technical memoria, the ayuntamiento declaration, the electrical certificate, the registration with the distributor and the switch to a self-consumption contract are all inside the turnkey price. You sign; we file.

What if something breaks after you've been paid?

Tier-1 panels and inverters with manufacturer warranties, installed by our own crews rather than subcontractors, plus a workmanship warranty on the installation itself — the exact terms are printed on every kit page and repeated in your quote. Remote monitoring usually shows us a fault before you notice it.

I live in an apartment — do I need the comunidad to agree?

On a shared roof, yes — and that approval is yours to obtain, not something we can promise on your behalf. Spanish law (LPH art. 17.1) lets a comunidad approve solar with a one-third majority instead of unanimity, and we prepare the technical description and documents you put to the junta. ENERA does the installation itself and files everything with the town hall — the licencia or declaración responsable. If you would like us alongside you at the meeting, or to help submit the request, that is often possible and is sometimes included in the price of the system: write to us and we will agree how to handle it. On your own roof or private terrace you decide alone, and a shared installation can be split between several flats.

Is solar worth it in Empuriabrava?

Empuriabrava's canal-front villas — flat-roofed, boat-mooring plots threaded through a marina grid — are almost entirely low-rise, unshaded and south-facing where the canal layout allows. PVGIS puts annual irradiation at 1,879 kWh/m² here, giving a specific yield of 1,513 kWh per installed kWp and a typical payback of around 4.1–5.7 years for a well-sized villa system.

Why Empuriabrava suits solar — for a marina holiday home

Empuriabrava is a holiday-home market almost by design: canal-front villas built for the boating season, most occupied for a fraction of the year, with flat roofs that take ballasted mounting cleanly and without penetrating the waterproofing. That pattern changes how a system earns its return — a larger share of the value here comes from exported surplus credited under compensación de excedentes during the months the house sits empty, rather than from same-day self-consumption.

44.6% of Empuriabrava's 12,201 residents are foreign-born, among the highest shares on this coast, and with an average income of about €12,832 per resident, owners are used to managing a Spanish property from abroad. ENERA's monitoring app lets you check production between visits, and we run the whole project — design, installation and paperwork — in your own language.

What does a solar installation cost in Empuriabrava?

A typical Empuriabrava villa takes a 6–10 kW system, priced between €5,300 and €8,300 fully installed — panels, inverter, mounting, labour, legalisation and VAT all included in one fixed, itemised quote. The flat roofs common on canal-front villas here take ballasted aluminium frames tilted to about 38° for peak yield, with no roof penetration needed. Every installation is registered on the RAC (Registre d'autoconsum de Catalunya), which we handle for you.

Solar incentives and tax breaks in Empuriabrava

We checked the current tax ordinances of Castelló d'Empúries, the municipality Empuriabrava belongs to, in full. The IBI ordinance grants a 50% bonification on the IBI quota for the five years following the installation, capped at €500 a year and at the total installation cost stated in the works licence — the cap, not the 50% headline, is what most owners actually receive. The bonification is available for the first installation of each renewable type only and requires RAC certification.

Catalunya does not currently offer a regional IRPF income-tax deduction for solar — we checked the Agencia Tributaria's full list of Catalan autonomic deductions and none covers renewables or self-consumption. ENERA prepares the certificates and applications for the IBI bonification on your behalf.

How much can you save on electricity in Empuriabrava?

With Spanish grid electricity around €0.19 per kWh, a well-sized system in Empuriabrava can cut a household's annual bill by roughly €1,130–1,620 — though for a part-time canal-front home, more of that value comes from exported surplus credited under compensación de excedentes than from direct daytime use, since the house is often empty outside the boating season. At Empuriabrava's irradiation levels, payback on a typical installation lands around 4.1–5.7 years, with 20-plus years of production left after that. These are estimates: every quote we send includes a projection built around how you actually use the property.

How your installation works, start to finish

ENERA runs the whole project as a single turnkey service. We start with a remote design from satellite imagery and a recent electricity bill, sizing the system to your real (or projected) consumption and sending a fixed, itemised quote — no site visit needed for a firm number. If you go ahead, installation on a typical Empuriabrava villa takes one to two days on the roof. In parallel we prepare and submit every document: the technical memoria, the electrical certificate (butlletí), RAC registration for the grid connection and compensación de excedentes agreement, plus the IBI bonification request with the Ajuntament de Castelló d'Empúries. You sign; we file — manageable remotely if you're not on-site.

Solar in Empuriabrava: your questions

How much do solar panels cost in Empuriabrava?

A typical Empuriabrava villa takes a 6–10 kW system, priced between €5,300 and €8,300 fully installed — panels, inverter, mounting, labour, legalisation and VAT all included in one fixed quote. The flat roofs common on canal-front villas here keep mounting straightforward and hold labour costs down.

How much can I save with solar in Empuriabrava?

Most Empuriabrava households save roughly €1,130–1,620 a year, with grid power around €0.19 per kWh. Because many Empuriabrava properties are occupied mainly during the boating season, a larger share of that saving comes from exported surplus credited under compensación de excedentes rather than same-day use. Typical payback is around 4.1–5.7 years.

Can foreign or non-resident owners in Empuriabrava go solar?

Yes. About 44.6% of Empuriabrava's residents are already foreign, and non-residents install solar routinely — you need only a Spanish NIE number and proof of ownership, no residency required. ENERA works entirely in English, French, German, Dutch, Spanish and Russian, and can manage the entire project remotely if you're not able to be on-site.

Do I need permission for solar panels in Empuriabrava, and are there local rebates?

A standard Empuriabrava install needs a works notification with the Ajuntament de Castelló d'Empúries plus RAC registration for the grid connection — ENERA files both. Empuriabrava's IBI ordinance grants a 50% bonification for five years, capped at €500 a year. Catalunya has no regional IRPF deduction for solar, so we don't claim one.

How much energy will a system produce in Empuriabrava?

Empuriabrava receives about 1,879 kWh/m² of solar irradiation a year. On a south-facing flat roof tilted to around 38°, each installed kWp generates roughly 1,513 kWh annually — production that continues, and exports for credit, even when the house is empty.

Do I need a battery for my Empuriabrava home?

Not necessarily. For a canal-front home used mainly in the boating season, most owners rely on compensación de excedentes to bank export credit for the months the house sits empty rather than paying extra for a battery. A battery makes more sense if you spend longer stretches at the property or want backup for onboard systems. We model both options in your quote.
