Why the coast pays back fastest

Across the 11 provinces this site covers, PVGIS puts annual output between 1,511 and 1,697 kWh per installed kWp, the top of that range being Almería. That is a real difference — roughly a season of payback between the coolest and the sunniest province — but it is smaller than the difference between a household that uses its own electricity at midday and one that does not.

The coast wins on both counts at once. Mediterranean housing runs air conditioning, pool pumps and, increasingly, an EV charger during daylight, so a larger share of production is consumed rather than exported; and the winter heating load that dominates a northern European bill is much smaller here. That combination, not the sunshine alone, is why a coastal Spanish roof pays back in years rather than in decades.

What it costs, and what changes the number

The turnkey figure of €3,700–€7,000 for 4–8 kWp includes VAT and covers panels, inverter, mounting, wiring, the installation, the legalisation and the change to a self-consumption contract. Spanish quotes should state whether IVA is included — ours do, and the price is one figure rather than a base plus extras.

What moves it: roof type (a flat azotea needs ballasted frames, a tiled roof needs hooks and rails), the distance from the crew’s base, whether the roof is shared with neighbours, and whether you add storage. A battery is quoted separately because it repays only where a real share of consumption happens after sunset — which is a question about your evenings, not about the equipment.

What help exists, and what does not

Three layers, and only one of them is national. Municipal: state law lets any ayuntamiento discount up to 50% of the IBI and up to 95% of the ICIO, but only where its own ordenanza fiscal creates the bonification — so it genuinely differs between neighbouring towns, and every town page on this site names the ordinance we read, or says nothing.

Regional: some comunidades have an income-tax deduction of their own and others do not. The Comunitat Valenciana deducts 40% of a self-consumption investment at a main residence (20% at a second home) on a base of up to €8,800 a year; the Región de Murcia deducts 50% to 25% depending on income, on a base of up to €10,000. The 2025 Agencia Tributaria lists for Andalucía and Catalunya contain no renewables deduction at all — we say so rather than imply one exists.

National: the IRPF energy-efficiency deductions are not an equipment rebate. They are earned by a measured reduction in the dwelling’s demand or non-renewable consumption, proven with energy performance certificates issued before and after the works. Any quote that presents them as an automatic discount on panels is describing something else.

The steps, in order

You need a NIE and to be the owner of the property (or to have the owner sign). The installer prepares a memoria técnica and files a declaración responsable — or a works licence, depending on the municipality — with your ayuntamiento. The finished installation is certified electrically. The supply point is then registered for self-consumption with the distributor for your area: i-DE across the Comunitat Valenciana, Murcia and Madrid, e-distribución across Catalunya and Andalucía, and other operators elsewhere. Only after that registration does compensación de excedentes start crediting your exported surplus against the monthly bill.

In practice the roof work is the short part — panels usually produce within days of the crew arriving — and the registration finishes in the weeks afterwards. If the roof is common property in a block of flats, the comunidad de propietarios has to approve the installation first, and that meeting is often the longest item in the whole schedule.

Buying before you move

A large share of the people reading this are not in Spain yet. That is workable, with two limits worth knowing early. The quote can be prepared remotely — an address, a recent electricity bill or the CUPS number, and roof geometry from imagery are usually enough for a serious figure — but the trámites cannot start before the property is in your name, and the change to a self-consumption contract has to be signed by whoever holds the supply contract.

Non-residents install on exactly the same terms as residents: a NIE and the escritura, no Spanish residency required. The practical questions are access on the build days and who is reachable for signatures in the fortnight afterwards. Agreeing that before the crew is booked is the difference between a switch-on in weeks and one that waits for a flight.

In 8 languages

Quotes, the survey conversation, the explanation of what was filed and the after-sales calls happen in English, Spanish, German, Dutch, French, Russian, Ukrainian or Polish — 8 languages, because that is who buys houses on this coast. The filings themselves are in Spanish, because the ayuntamiento and the distributor require Spanish; what we can do is make sure you know what each document says before it is submitted in your name.

Where we actually work

Honestly: our density is on the Costa Blanca. 353 of our 583 installations are on that coast alone. That is also why this site is organised as 7 coastal zones and 11 provinces with 44 town pages between them, rather than as a uniform national map that would imply an even footprint we do not have.

Beyond it we travel. For provinces where we have no base — the inland and northern ones — we prioritise systems large enough to justify a crew making the journey, and we put the logistics in the written quote instead of hiding them in the unit price. If your address is outside the areas where we work regularly, saying so on the first call gets you a straight answer about whether the trip makes sense, rather than a quote that quietly assumes it does.
